The human being is a walking miracle. Indeed, it is a wonderful process to contemplate that the food taken through the mouth ends up as blood, bone, muscle, brain, sinew, cartilage, tissue, skin, and hair.
Yet, we take it for granted.
The process by which food breaks down into small molecules, dissolves to form blood, and circulate around the body to nourish and build up the whole being, from nail to eyes and brain, is a remarkable feat of engineering.
Notwithstanding, how many of us do not abuse the body just to please a present lust, appetite, and cravings? How careless are we to gulp down “anything” without considering its consequences on the body? How easily do we take life with impunity and reckless abandon?

One of the greatest mysteries of life is the effect of diet on physical health (disease and strength), mind (behaviour, psyche, thought, mood), and personality (the whole being).
A few examples shall suffice:
- Refined sugar and sugary foods not only make us obese, predisposing us to hypertension, stroke, and diabetes but also shoots up dopamine in the brain, causing addiction (similar to cocaine), reduced self-control, dementia, memory loss, hyperactivity disorders, depression, anxiety… The list is endless.
In effect, refined sugar not only destroys you physically, but affects your emotions, mental capacity, intelligence, behavior, and total being.
- The same effect produced by sugar is also produced by fats and fatty foods: animal-rich foods such as eggs, milk, meat, etc.
- Caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, and illegal drugs (cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, fentanyl, etc.) are stimulants that are known to equally destroy the body and alter behavior, mentality, mood, and total personality.

Currently, deaths from noncommunicable diseases, which are mainly caused by these three ingredients above, are the highest: more than deaths caused by any other cause.
What does it mean? It means we kill ourselves by our lifestyles more than any other cause of death. It means so many lives would have been saved but for these dietary and lifestyle habits.

When you, therefore, sit to eat, consider what is before you, my love. Is it for your health or death? Are you eating to live, or living to eat and die? The food given to man and animals after creation was simple: plants, fruits, and seeds (Genesis 1:29-30).
He who made this wonderful machinery also prescribed for us the best food and it is the healthiest for our being: free from stimulants, refined fats, and sugar. When He rested on the 7th day Sabbath, He saw that all He did was good!!
As we rest on this Sabbath, let’s reflect on the crown of God’s creation: man. Let us thank God for making us in His image and glory. So fearfully and wonderfully made. Let us take good care of His creation, including our wonderful bodies!!
